COURSE PURPOSE: The course aims to provide students with the in-depth knowledge of the functions of financial markets and institutions and the functions of the financial system in the Kenyan economy and with the skills to manage financial risks in business. Students will be expected to develop and enhance the knowledge and skills in the area of financial management in a changing and challenging corporate environment.

EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the unit, the learner should be able to:
• Analyze the financial system in Kenya
• Appraise the process, operation and regulation of financial markets
• Analyze the process, operations and regulation of financial institutions
• Classify the instruments traded on in the financial markets.
• Relate the challenges and any key reforms in the financial markets
• Examine the process of risk management in financial institutions

COURSE DESCRIPTION/CONTENT: Introduction, Financial markets (structure, instruments, key parties and operations), Financial markets regulation- objectives, approaches, reforms and key challenges, financial institutions (industry overview, role in economy and operations and Risk management in financial institutions
